Synopsis:

Half-Blood meets Antigoddess in a thrilling, romantic new series from New York Times bestselling author Brenda Drake.

When a stranger gives Analiese Jordan a list of names before he dies, the last thing she expects to see is her own on it. Not. Cool. Her search for answers leads to the man’s grandson, Marek, who has dangerous secrets of his own. Both are determined to unlock the mystery of the list.

But the truth is deadly. Analiese is a descendant of the God of Death, known as a Riser, with the power to raise the dead and control them. Finding out she has hidden powers? Cool. Finding out she turns corpses into killers? No, thank you.

Now the trail plants her and Marek in the middle of a war between gods who apparently want to raise an army of the Risen, and Analiese must figure out how to save the world—from herself.

Excerpt

The classroom smells like a funeral home.

Hushed voices pulse over the pairs of students hunching over trays spaced across the counters. The odor of bodies fresh out of gym class mingles with the scent of formaldehyde.

Hair dampens at my temples. A crematory would be cooler.

Not many have finished their assignments. Only a few overachievers sit in the rows of empty desks on the other side of the room, their tasks completed, proud smiles on their faces.

Mrs. Cryer shuffles around the tables watching over us—a reaper waiting for lost souls, her bony finger pointing out errors. She shuffles around with purpose. She shuffles around without direction. Then she stops at our table, her eyes peering over reading glasses.

“Mr. Bove and Miss Jordan, you two are falling behind,” she says, a disapproving tsk in her voice. She only uses last names when she wants to emphasize her warning. “Best hurry before class ends.”

She continues shuffling around.

Biology is my least favorite class. Mrs. Cryer’s assignments are outdated. It’s her last year teaching, her retirement long overdue. Stern and direct, she’s not the sort of teacher I usually like, but I do. There’s an underlying kindness to Mrs. Cryer. A kindnesshiding in her eyes, evident in her actions.

One of the things I like about my school: my brother, Dalton, is in the same grade. We’re not twins or anything. Actually, we’re cousins. His parents adopted me when mine were killed in a boating accident on Lake Como in Italy. I don’t remember them. I was two when that all went down.

The thing I hate about school: Dalton’s in my biology class.

“Come on, Ana.” Dalton slides the dissection tray closer to me. “I did all the setup. Just make the first cut.”

The little green body looks rubbery—almost fake—crucified to the tray with pins as it is. I push strands of dark hair from my face with a latex-gloved hand. I could’ve opted out of this barbaric ritual of separating body parts from an innocent frog.

Why did I even agree to this?

About the Author

Brenda Drake is a New York Times bestselling author of young adult fiction. She grew up the youngest of three children, an Air Force brat, and the continual new kid at school. Her fondest memories growing up is of her eccentric, Irish grandmother’s animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. So it was only fitting that she would choose to write stories with a bend toward the fantastical. When she’s not writing or hanging out with her family, she haunts libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops, or reads someplace quiet and not at all exotic (much to her disappointment).

Blitz — Wishes in a Bottle

Wishes in a Bottle

Author: Allie McCormack

Publication date: January 15th 2019

Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance

Goodreads | Amazon

Synopsis:

Centuries ago in plague-struck Italy, Julian DiConti cast a powerful spell in desperation to have the magical power to be able to help his people who were dying in horrific conditions. The spell goes spectacularly awry, leaving Julian enslaved to a Djinn bottle, bound to grant three wishes to each Master of the bottle until the spell can be broken. More than anything, Julian longs for a normal life – for a home, and a family. After six hundred years, however, he has begun to despair of ever being freed from the spell.

Enter Alessandra Taylor, a young woman who has followed her calling to help others, in the face of vociferous disapproval from her family, particularly her controlling father. Working at a shelter for battered women, she’s thrilled to meet the reclusive Julian DiConti, whose collection of garments from third world countries has provided funding for shelters across the country. When Julian turns out to be a Djinn from the old bottle she found in her attic, she hears his story and empathizes with his despair. Although she’s willing to free him, he can’t tell her how. As time goes by, their initial attraction blossoms into a love that both realize is doomed. Once she has made her third wish, the magic of the bottle will whisk Julian away and out of her life forever… unless she can somehow figure out how to free him. But one by one, she’s forced to use the precious wishes to help others.

Excerpt

Jackson called Laura to consult with one of the movers, and Alessandra watched as her sister hurried across the room to take part in a spirited discussion with the two men.

“She’s getting along really well,” Alessandra told Julian in an undertone. “I can’t believe how happy she looks! It hasn’t been so very long, either.”

“She’s been unhappy for a long time,” Julian said. “Now she’s finally discovering what it’s like to be able to be herself.”

Alessandra agreed. “She never had a chance to be herself, or even to find out who she is…not in our house, anyway. We all had to do what we were told, what was expected of us, even once we were grown. Father chose Robert for Laura, you know. Hand-picked from his top crop of salesmen and business associates. He picked someone for all my sisters.”

“And did he pick one for you?” Julian asked, cocking an eyebrow at her.

“Of course.” She smirked in fond memory. “I dumped hot soup in the lap of the first one during dinner, the night Father brought him home to introduce to me.”

“Then there was that guy who lived with his mother, even though he had to be at least thirty,” Laura chimed in, having apparently broken off another sotto voce altercation with Jackson to catch this last part. “On the day before he took you to meet him, you went and got your nose pierced, and got a henna tattoo that looked very permanent on your right breast, just where it would show over the top of your shirt.”

“Yes, and I bought a very low-cut tank top and denim mini-skirt,” Alessandra remembered with apparent pleasure. “And I wore coffin heeled shoes and purple plaid hose that sagged.” She grinned. “Those were the days.”

“The black lipstick was a nice touch. I thought Father would have a fit,” Laura offered with a giggle.

Blitz — Phoenix

Phoenix

Author: Carolyn Anthony

Publication date: January 7th 2019

Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

Goodreads | Amazon

Synopsis:

Valentina.

When Jaxxon Reginhardt walks into my gym, my rigidly structured existence begins to crumble. He’s a beast of a man, the personification of power, and more beautiful than any man has a right to be. He’s everything I avoid. Everything I fear. Yet, the second I see him, something deep within me roars to life. He makes me want. He sets my body aflame with just a look, and makes me wish I wasn’t a damaged shell no one will ever love.

I don’t have time for men when my whole world is built around self-preservation. But Jaxxon breaks down all of my strategically constructed boundaries like no one ever has.

How can I give into these new cravings, when there is a half-remembered demon from my past waiting for me to fall asleep, preying on my vulnerability?

If he ever knew the truth, he would run, and it would destroy me …

Jaxxon.

The last thing I need in my complicated life is a snarky, frustrating, spitfire of a woman like Valentina Durare. As if that isn’t bad enough, there’s something haunted about her. My head says stay the hell away, but I can’t seem to get on board with that logic.

Something about me scares her. I can feel it. She’s a beautiful enigma I ache to understand.

The closer we get, the more she responds and draws me in. It can’t be me she fears. There must be something else … Something tied to the scars she refuses to show me.

But I’m stubborn son-of-a-bitch. I want all of her—not half. Because when we touch, nothing less will do but her complete surrender.

I need her to trust me, before her fear destroys us.

Excerpt

He moved his hands to my back and unhooked the chain holding the back of my gown together. As the sides loosened and fell open, my muscles strung tight, but I stayed where I was.

Resting his hands on my shoulders again, he slipped his fingers under the sides of the loosened sleeves. “Look at me, sugar.”

I leaned back enough to see his face and crossed my arms over my chest, which earned me the shit-eating grin that both got under my skin and made me wet as hell.

With his eyes locked to mine, he inched the top of my dress down my arms, causing my breasts to push up over the neckline.

“When’s the last time you came?”

I couldn’t stop my mouth from falling open. He wrapped his hands around my wrists, his fingers warming my overheated skin. “I think that’s a bit personal.”

“Sweetness, we’re about to get very fuckin’ personal. You’re straddling me. I can feel how turned on you are, and I’m trying not to freak you out. It’s a legitimate question, given what you’ve told me.” He kept his hold loose, but still held onto me.

When I looked down at our hands, my vision blurred…

Cuffs. Leather cuffs. Metal table. The images flashed like slides in an old movie reel and I jerked away from him on a gasp.

“Valentina!” My name came out in such a hard tone it jolted me right out of the dark place. His thumbs dug into the pulse points of my wrists, before I fell back. “Where’d you go, sugar?” His eyes searched mine, the concern visible even in the dim light. “You okay?”

I gave a quick nod. Fast, it was so fast, so clear—but enough …

No! Not now … Please, not now!

“You sure?” Letting go of my wrists, he brought both hands to the back of my head.

“Mmm-hmm. Yes.” I covered his hands with mine and interlocked our fingers, holding onto him like a lifeline.

“When, baby?”

“I—I don’t remember.”

Please, Jaxxon. Please, take it away …<

He nodded. “Then that’s way too long.” He pulled me against him.

I wedged my arms between the back of his head and the cushions. The warmth of his bare skin, the strength of his huge arms, transferred to me as I pressed my body harder against his.

For a while, he simply held me. When my breathing regulated and the shock of the memory waned, the contentment to simply be held faded. His erection lay pressed against my throbbing clit. A simmering heat built in my core and spread outwards. I buried my face against his neck, brushing my lips under the tender part of his ear, lightly at first, but when he started rubbing my bare back with firmer, more aggressive strokes I sat up in his lap.

No more preamble needed, he slid the top of my dress down my arms, dragging the material between our bodies. The seam of the neckline scraped over my swollen nipples. I inhaled quickly at the twinge of pain, and embraced the pleasure it left behind.

About the Author

Carolyn Anthony is a sucker for a dark romance with a dominant, tattooed, alpha man at the helm. Her characters deal with real life issues: the painful, the tragic, the damaging sort of life events that leave both external and internal scars, because she’s been there. Her heroines are strong women at the core who will always find what’s been lost, taken or exploited: their strength, their self-worth, their identity, their innocence or their love. She writes about women exploring their sexuality, owning that sexuality and enjoying it. Along for the ride, the flawed, yet redemptive and gorgeous men who prove worthy enough to be on that journey with them.

Review — To Dream is to Die

To Dream is to Die

Author: Sarah Lampkin

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Pages: 296

Goodreads | Amazon

Synopsis:

Eighteen-year-old Brenna Whit is entering college as a freshman and starting to meet new people, but she hides a dark secret. Because of an accident that happened three years ago, her spirit wanders the Fade whenever she falls asleep. It’s something she wants to keep hidden from the world, but when she sees someone watching her in spirit form, she fears the secret’s out. With new friends, possibly new enemies, school, and a new crush, Brenna has too much to worry about for just her freshman year of college.

Review:

Holy cow this book! I knew it sounded interesting but i had no idea how sucked into the pages I was gonna get! I loved every page and was sucked in from page one and even now being finished, I want to keep reading and know what happens.

I loved Brenna. I usually dont like the female leads but I have to say that isnt the case here. She was such a strong character even when she had moments of stubbornness.

Aeria and Damon are also 2 characters I couldn’t get enough of. It was refreshing to have two good friends in the mix that even I as a reader trusted. I can’t wait to read the next book and get more of all 3 of these characters.

This book deals with a girl who walks in the spirit plane while she sleeps. What all that entails you will have to read to find out. You stay in suspense the whole time, unable to figure out where things are going to go, which of course makes it even better. You won’t be able to stop reading and get ready for a book hangover once you finish the last page!

Review — Forgiving Keven

Forgiving Keven

Author: Siobhan Davis

Release Date: January 7, 2019

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Pages: 400F

Goodreads | Amazon

Synopsis:

She’s the one who got away. He’s the boy she can’t forget…

Cheryl
They say you never forget your first love, but I’m determined to prove Keven Kennedy is just a random boy from my past.

It’s not like I still think about him after all this time. Or daydream about how hot his kisses were and what it felt like to have his hands on my skin.

Nope, that’s not me. I’m in a happy place in my life. Engaged to a great man and finishing the last year of my photography degree.

But since I returned to Massachusetts, everything reminds me of the boy who ripped my heart to shreds. Especially when my fiancé’s constant business trips, and dwindling attention, raises old fears to the surface.

And then the unthinkable happens—Keven saunters back into my life, turning it upside down once more.

It’s ironic he thinks he’s protecting me when the only one I need protecting from is him.

Keven
They say you never forget your first love. In my case, it’s true. Most everyone in high school thought Cheryl and I were a match made in heaven and that nothing could tear us apart. Until I messed up spectacularly and lost the best thing to ever happen to me.

Years have passed, girls have come and gone, but no one has laid claim to my heart in the way Cheryl did.

I thought she was lost to me forever when an unexpected encounter with an uptight FBI agent, and an intriguing proposition, brings the beautiful blonde back into my life.

I didn’t hesitate to sign on the dotted line.

I let Cheryl down once before. I’m not going to fail her this time.

Review:

I have been following this series from the beginning and I can’t stop reading them all! All of the books are full of suspense and twists, but this one takes the cake. I found myself biting my nails the whole time.

I loved Cheryl and I am glad I got to follow her POV to know what she was going through. There were times I wanted to shake her, but I understand why she does certain things and it made me like her even more. She was a true, real character, not one of those characters that are very unbelievable.

Of course I loved Keven already. I found myself drawn to him from early on in this series and wanting to know more about him. Naturally I was so excited to get my hands on this book and finally get him into my system! Everything about him drew me in and I found myself adding him to my book boyfriend list.

This book is packed full of so many emotions. Love, anger, fear, suspense, anxiety, turmoil, loss, and family love. I am sure there are more that I just can’t seem to put into words. The pages will fly by as you devour it, you won’t be able to put it down. The characters go through so much that you have to know what happens next. The author truly has a gift for making sure you are sucked in from the very first page and not able to let it go even after the book is finished. I know I will be in a book hangover and possibly have to re-read this one right away!
